MEDIA RELEASE: MUNICIPALITY OFFERS HELP TO MANAGE FINANCIAL STRAIN

Did you know that the Mossel Bay Municipality offers help to residents who struggle to meet their financial responsibilities? There are several options available, which not only includes four categories of assisting the poor, but pensioners too may also apply for discounted rates. The municipality urges residents to make contact and, in this way, get assistance in managing their finances when it comes to municipal accounts.

The categories offering relief to the poor, are as follows:  

Valuation Indigent: Homeowners with a residential property valuation of less than R125 000 automatically qualify as Valuation Indigent.

  • Indigent Level 1: Household income of all residents older than 18 years is less than R4200 (R4220 from 1 October 2023) per month
  • Indigent Level 2: Household income of all residents older than 18 years is less than die R8 400 (R 8 440 from 1 October 2023) per month.
  • Indigent household, housing a person with disability: Household income of all residents older than 18 years is less than R8 400 (R8 440 in October 2023) per month.

 BENEFITS TO INDIGENT HOUSEHOLDS

Valuation Indigent, Indigent level 1 households and households where a person with a disability lives will receive:

  • 6kl of free water and 50 kWh of free electricity per month and not pay any basic charges for water and electricity services.
  • Will only pay for property rates refuses services or sewerage services.
  • Indigent level 2 household will receive:
  • 6kl of free water and 25 kWh of free electricity per month and only pay 50% of the basic charges for water services
  • Will only pay 50% of property rates, refuse services and sewerage services.

 PENSIONER REBATES

Mossel Bay Municipality also assists the elderly in the form of pensioner’s rebates on property rates, sewerage charges and from 1 July 2023, for the first time a discount is offered on the basic charges on electricity.

  • A pensioner household that earns up to R18100 per month receives a 50% subsidy.
  • A pensioner household that earns up to R24 200 per month qualifies for a subsidy of 30%, subject to certain conditions.

 CHECKLIST FOR APPLICATION

The account holder must apply on the prescribed application form and the following information is required:

  • Municipal account number of the household;
  • Proof of the account holder’s identity;
  • Proof of income of the total household;
  • Proof of registration of the person with a disability (if it is an indigent household where a disabled person resides);
  • A medical certificate to confirm the client’s health condition must be obtained at regular intervals to qualify for this support (if it is an indigent household where a disabled person resides);
  • Sworn affidavit that the person with a disability is a permanent resident of the property (if it is an indigent household where a disabled person resides);
  • Completed consent Form of the South African Revenue Services (SARS)
