In the July newsletter of the Mossel Bay Municipality, mention was made of asbestos removal and the service offered to the community by the municipality in this regard.
Here is what the municipality offers:
Members of the public can bring asbestos to the open days for hazardous household waste removal (25- 26 and 29 September) depending on the quantity.
The following rates are applicable for the 2025/2026 financial year:
Wheelbarrow – R575
Light delivery vehicle – R 1150
Light delivery vehicle with trailer – R2300 Another alternative option for removal is contacting the municipality for an onsite inspection.
Send a request to admin@mosselbay.gov.za (for attention Feligo Keys); fkeys@mosselbay.gov.za or call 044 606 5281.
During the inspection the weight is determined and documented.
The amount for removal (R90 per kg) is then calculated per kilogram and payment is made at the municipal offices.
Upon proof of payment, arrangements for removal are made.
Members of the public were concerned about a cut-off date for asbestos removal. The municipality investigated and found the following information (Source: Department of Labour - access the full document here)
Question: Why is there no set "cut-off" date for the removal of all asbestos building materials?
A: A significant number of buildings in South Africa still contains asbestos materials. If these materials are well-maintained - meaning they are not broken, damaged, or deteriorating - they can remain safely in place for years. The cost of safely removing and disposing of asbestos and asbestos-containing materials is high and may be disproportionate to the actual risk, should a blanket “cut-off” date or ban be imposed.
However, each employer is required to develop a maintenance plan for any asbestos that remains in place. This plan must include a strategy to phase out all asbestos and asbestos-containing materials within a timeframe that is appropriate to their specific circumstances.
