URBAN RENEWAL COMMITTEE TO ASSIST WITH REGENERATION OF THE CBD

The Mossel Bay Urban Renewal Committee, which was established by the Municipality towards the end of 2010, held its first meeting of the year at the Mossel Bay Municipality on 22 February 2011 to discuss various concerns about the present state of the Central Business District.

The Municipality established the Committee to help investigate the problems experienced in the area and also to make proposals to the Municipality for the regeneration of the area. Several shops have moved out of the area over the past number of years.

The Committee identified several short-term problems towards the end of last year and the majority of these were resolved immediately. They will, however, also look at longer term issues such as the physical upgrading of the area and possible changes to the existing municipal regulations for the use of the buildings. The establishment of a Central Improvement District for the CBD will also be investigated.

Representatives of the Mossel Bay Business Chamber, Mossel Bay Tourism, the Heritage Society and the Municipality serve on the Committee together with representatives of CBD property owners. The chairperson is Mr Johan van Rensburg of the Mossel Bay Business Chamber.

Enquiries about the Committee can be addressed to Mr Dries Cilliers at the Municipality at telephone (044) 606-5071.
