NOTICE: Sick and dead birds caused by bird flu
The public are advised to report all dead or dying birds found along the coast of Mossel Bay to the local state vet in George or Cape Nature on (044) 802 5300 after tests that were done on birds found here tested positive for Avian Influenza (H5N8 HPAI or bird flu). Please be cautious when encountering any dead or sick birds. For any advice, contact a seabird rehabilitation centre such as SANCCOB or SAPREC on 082 364 3382 should you have any enquiries or would like to report any sick or dead birds found. Although the virus is not infectious to people, it can be spread via hands, clothes, beach equipment and vehicles. The local Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (S.M.A.R.T.) can also be contacted on 072 227 4715.
