National Blue Flag season launch

17 OCTOBER 2018

MEDIA RELEASE: NATIONAL BLUE FLAG 2018/19 SEASON LAUNCH IN MOSSEL BAY

Mossel Bay Municipality is proud to have hosted the National Blue Flag 2018/19 season launch on 12 October 2018 on Santos Beach in Mossel Bay, Western Cape. No less than four Mossel Bay municipal beaches, namely Santos, De Bakke, Hartenbos and Klein-Brak (Little Brak), were awarded Blue Flag status for the 2018/19 season. Glentana again obtained Blue Flag pilot status and if completed successfully as in 2017/2018, we will be able to apply for full Blue Flag status for the 2019/2020 season. We rejoice to the fact that Santos Beach was once again awarded Blue Flag status after losing it on a technical issue in 2017/2018 and we always strive to uphold International Blue Flag standards at all our beaches.

The Deputy Mayor of Mossel Bay, Councillor Dirk Kotze, welcomed all to Mossel Bay and gave an overview of all this beautiful town and surrounds has to offer, see and experience. “As the town of Mossel Bay, we are honoured to host the launch of the new Blue Flag season and as the Mossel Bay Council, we see the importance of local tourists and we try to keep our facilities in good condition to welcome tourists to our shores especially during the summer season.

“We always try to maintain our facilities and one of our top priorities to maintain our Blue Flag status because it is a well-respected award that takes educational, environmental and cultural value of the beach into account, ensuring that each Blue Flag beach is not only beautiful and safe, but also environmentally friendly and socially responsible,” said Deputy Mayor Dirk Kotze.

Some of the other distinguished guests, included Wessa CEO, Dr Thommie Burger, Ms Patience Molokoza, Director of Programme Planning and Implementation: National Department of Tourism, as well as Mayors, Municipal Managers and officials of various Western Cape municipalities and other stakeholders and recipients.

A total of 66 Blue Flags were awarded this year to 46 beaches, 8 marinas and 12 sustainable tourism boats around South Africa for the 2018/19 Blue Flag season, which officially starts on 1 November 2018 and will end on 31 October 2019. The Western Cape has achieved the most Blue Flag sites with 30 beaches, 12 boats and seven of the eight Blue Flag marinas, including the V & A Waterfront.

Although the Blue Flag international award focuses on the environmental management of coastlines and coastal waters that aims to promote tourism and development, it is also a symbol for quality of beaches, as well as in terms of safety, amenities, cleanliness, environmental information and environmental management. Besides the pristine setting, eco-friendly filled goodie bags and Blue Flag certificate award ceremony, guests were entertained by the beautiful sounds of the Mossel Bay municipal choir who among other, led with the National Anthem.

To conclude the proceedings, the Santos Beach Blue Flag for the new season was raised jointly by Deputy Mayor Kotze, Dr Burger and Ms Molokoza. Mossel Bay Municipality would like to thank the following sponsors: Wessa and the National Department of Tourism, as well as Santos Express, Mossel Bay Tourism, Garden Route District Municipality, RNA George, Media24 and the Mossel Bay Advertiser.
