GOODS SHED OPENS NEXT WEEK

The popular Goods Shed flea market in Bland Street near the Mossel Bay harbour will reopen its doors next Thursday after having been closed for several years. This time it will be managed as a small business and local economic development project by the Mossel Bay Municipality.

The Municipality says it had an excellent response to its advertisement for tenants and a total of 53 stands have been allocated so far.

The market will have a coffee shop and restaurant as well as a variety of stalls where products ranging from biltong and nuts, sweets, angling equipment, toys, perfume, clothes and shoes to handmade furniture will be sold.

A farmers market will also be held in the shed on 15, 16 and 17 December 2011. The organisers of the popular bi-weekly farmers market at the Point have been asked to arrange this market as their market cannot be held at the Point during the holiday season because the Point caravan park is full and traffic volumes around the Point are high at this time of the year.

“We are happy with the response for tenants as there was very little time to advertise from the time that we heard we had an agreement with the National Ports Authority for the lease of the building. Many members of our target market had already made other arrangements for the festive season.

“We have awarded maximum 6-month contracts, which will enable us to review our tenant mix after six months and make adjustments to eventually establish a facility that will be a real community asset and bring more feet into the Mossel Bay CBD area,” said the Municipal Manager, Dr Michele Gratz.

People who are interested in stands can contact Mr Joubert Coetzee at telephone (044) 606-5100. They can also place their names on a waiting list for the allocation of stands at a later stage.
The Municipality has a negotiated a very favourable three-year lease for the historic old sandtone building and is therefore able to offer space to stall owners at favourable rates too.

The flea market hours are from 09:00 to 18:00, seven days a week, during peak periods such as the summer holidays and Easter. Outside peak periods the hours will be from 09:00 to 17:00 from Tuesdays to Sundays. It will be closed on Mondays.
