DIAS FESTIVAL FOR THE ADVENTUROUS

The 2012 Dias Festival, which will be held from 3 February 2012 to 5 February 2012, will have much to offer to the adventurous.

Included in the programme on Saturday, 4 February 2012 and Sunday 5 February 2012 are downhill skateboard races as well as a box cart race. A mountain trail bike urban assault through the streets, parks and even buildings of Mossel Bay is a novelty that is sure to appeal to the adventurous.

The downhill racing on skateboards as well as the box cart race will be from the top of 17th Avenue, next to the Dutch Reformed South church, then left into Cape Road, right into Marsh Street and left into Church Street. It will end at the bank on the Corner of Bland and Church Streets. High speeds are likely to be achieved in these events and participants will have to exercise good control to ensure that they finish the events unscathed. Strict safety measures will, however, be in place.

The skateboarding event will start at 13:00 on Saturday, 4 February 2012, and end at 18:00. It will continue with the final rounds from 09:00 to 13:00 the following day. The event co-ordinator is Michael Sheppard who can be contacted by e-mail at michael@wavessurfshop.co.za.

The box cart event, which will include a chapter for paraplegics, will be co-ordinated by John Crawley. His e-mail address is jcrawley@mweb.co.za. The race will start at 11:00 and end at 13:00 on 4 February 2012.

The mountain trail bike (MTB) event will start at 10:30, also on 4 February The route and programme are still being finalised. The event co-ordinator is Mark Mitchell who can be contacted at 0823578954.

A full program of the various races and the race routes will be available shortly. These events will together be known as the Mossel Bay Down Hill Dash, the name under which the events will be marketed going forward.

Other events that might appeal to the adventurous are the extreme sports at the Mossel Bay Yacht and Boat Club from 09:00 and 18:00 on 4 February, the motorsport gymkhana from 11:00 to 16:00 at the De Bakke parking area and precision skydiving at Santos beach at 13:30, all on 4 February 2012. More information on these events will be made known soon.

The full festival programme can be viewed on the Municipality’s website at http://www.mosselbay.gov.za.  Mr Bertu Nel, the Festival Convenor, can be contacted at 0828936848 or bertu@pinnaclepointestate.co.za. The Municipal Manager’s office ((044) 606-5003) can also be contacted for information.
