THE GOODS SHED IS BACK!

One of Mossel Bay’s most loved shopping experiences of recent years, the Goods Shed, is due to reopen its doors for business on 15 December 2011 in basically the same format as before, although strict criteria will apply.

The Mossel Bay Municipality has entered into a three-year lease contract with the National Ports Authority for the building and will sub-let the premises to stall owners to promote job creation and small business development. The project was approved at a Special Council Meeting on Monday, 14 November 2011.

“The old goods shed at the Mossel Bay harbour is a beautiful historic sandstone building, which has the potential to become a popular shopping destination once again. It has enough space to accommodate approximately 40 stalls while there are also other areas that could be made available to tenants.

“The focus will generally be on fresh produce, food products, and arts and crafts. Strict criteria will, however, be set by the Municipality to ensure that acceptable standards are maintained and that the Goods Shed will be a community asset to be proud of,” said the Municipal Manager, Dr Michele Gratz.

Dr Gratz said the reopening of the Goods Shed as an indoor market is part of the Municipality’s turnaround strategy for the Central Business District which inter alia involves projects to draw more feet to the area. It will at the same time promote local economic development.

“We would also like to express our gratitude to the National Ports Authority for making the building available to the Municipality at very favourable terms. This will in turn enable the Municipality to rent out stalls at equally favourable terms to stall owners,”she said.

People interested in leasing space in the building can contact Ms Cheryl Gordon at telephone (044) 606-5250 or fax number (044) 695-0575 or e-mail at cgordon@mosselbay.gov.za for more information, including on the criteria that will apply.

The closing date for applications is Friday, 2 December 2011 at 12:00 where after successful applicants will be notified accordingly.
